Strode Park — Inclusive Mural

Developed for Strode Park Foundation, this first-prize mural was designed for a communal dining space used by residents with physical disabilities, including people with limited or no verbal communication. Because conventional interviews could not represent everyone, I relied on site visits, observation and staff knowledge to understand how residents experienced the space. Theatre — one of the house’s most valued activities — and ducks and birds familiar from the park became a wordless stage scene. I then translated the unanimously selected proposal into a large-scale mural on site, carrying the project from sensitive research and inclusive concept development through to physical execution.

Designing Without Relying on Words

The project required communication beyond a conventional client conversation. Observation helped identify what attracted attention, which references felt familiar and how colour could support the dining space. The resulting ducks-on-stage concept did not simplify the audience; it removed unnecessary barriers and created a specific, cheerful image that residents could recognise and enjoy on their own terms.

Observation became the shared language.
